Tantra for personal development: Cultivating, connection, growth and healing
Explore tantra for personal development. Embrace healing, balance, and authentic growth on this non-dual journey that transcends boundaries and awakens your true self.
In this post we explore one of the hidden gems of personal development, authenticity, and healthy boundaries. It's a rich and deep path often shrouded in mystery and controversy, but in recent years, has been gaining more recognition and attention. We're diving deep into the world of Tantra, a powerful tool for personal growth that goes far beyond its sensual reputation.
My Tantra journey
I had my first introduction of the Tantric path over 20 years ago in London, through the teachings of Jean Klein and his student Billy Doyle. Klein’s simple teachings on non-duality and the nature of consciousness struck a chord with me that has rippled through my life ever since. But what the heck is non-duality anyway?
Unlocking the power of Tantra: A non-dual path to personal development
Before we dive deeper into the enchanting realm of Tantra and explore how it can fuel personal development, let's take a moment to understand a fundamental aspect of this ancient practice: Tantra as a non-dual path.
Understanding non-dualism
Non-dualism, often referred to as Advaita (meaning "not two" or "non-dual") in Hinduism, is a profound philosophical and spiritual concept. At its core, non-dualism asserts that all apparent distinctions and dualities in the universe are, in reality, illusions. It suggests that there exists an underlying unity or oneness that transcends these apparent divisions.
Imagine a river that, from a distance, appears as a single, flowing body of water. As you get closer, you may notice the ripples, waves, and eddies that give the impression of individuality. However, when you plunge your hand into the water, you realize that all these distinctions are merely temporary manifestations of the same continuous flow.
Non-dualism invites us to recognize a similar unity in the cosmos, asserting that all of creation is interconnected, and separation is an illusion. This profound perspective is foundational in many spiritual traditions, including Tantra.
Tantra: Embracing non-duality
Tantra, as a spiritual practice, embraces the principles of non-duality. It acknowledges that the boundaries we perceive between ourselves and the world, between the sacred and the mundane, and even between masculine and feminine energies, are constructs of the mind. In reality, Tantra teaches that there is an inherent interconnectedness and unity in all aspects of existence.
Within the world of Tantra, we seek to experience this unity firsthand. We recognize the divine within ourselves and in every living being. Tantra encourages the integration of opposites, the dissolution of dualities, and the transcendence of the ego.
The practice of Tantra is a journey towards oneness, where we move beyond the limitations of our individual identities and recognize ourselves as an integral part of the cosmic tapestry. It's a path that invites us to explore the depths of our consciousness and to awaken to the non-dual truth that has been echoed throughout spiritual traditions across the ages.
Unlocking the power of Tantra for personal development
Let's continue our exploration of how it can serve as a potent tool for personal development, healing, and self-discovery. Many of our problems are caused by a sense of separation that we have between ourselves and others (or nature), a sense of “us” and “them” can lead us to feeling isolated.
I believe that Tantra can help us find a healthier place within ourselves and our relationship with the world. If we truly are the children of God or to put it another way, manifestations of the divine, then what is actually wrong with us? What do we need to improve? How can we even be better? Perhaps all our striving, efforts, seeking and searching are for something that is already within us that we’ve simply forgotten?
The paradox of Tantra
Now you might be thinking: If everything is one and all separation is a construct of the mind, then why bother doing anything? But the truth is that we exist in time and space, bound by the laws of physics, and of course it’s obvious that we can affect our lives for better or for worse through our actions or inactions.
But at a deeper level Tantra invites us to the understanding and experience that our relationship between being and doing is not what it seems. In this context, our struggles, failures and even successes in life take on a different importance. We don’t need to hold on to everything. In fact, everything is just perfect as it is, and we can flow like water in the great river of creation mentioned above. Easier said than done!
Demystifying Tantra: What Is it and why now?
Let's take a moment now to clear the air about Tantra. Many people have a somewhat, shall we say, colorful perception of Tantra, often associating it solely with exotic sexual practices. While there's a tiny grain of truth in that, it's a fraction of what Tantra is all about.
Tantra is, at its core, a spiritual practice rooted in ancient Indian traditions. It encompasses a wide range of practices that aim to expand our consciousness, foster self-awareness, and connect us more deeply with ourselves and others.
So, why is Tantra suddenly in the limelight these days? Well, in a world that's more connected than ever yet paradoxically leaving many feeling isolated, Tantra offers a path to rediscover our true selves and cultivate meaningful connections. It's like a refreshing oasis in the desert of modern life.
Modern day Neo-tantra
Now, most modern tantra workshops you go to won't make any mention of non-duality. Why? Because it's just too way out there! But it's important to note that this is the basis of modern so-called Neo-tantra. But don't worry, you don't have to understand or even accept non-duality to benefit from practicing Tantra.
Healing trauma and cultivating authenticity
One of Tantra's most profound gifts is its ability to heal trauma. In a world where so many of us carry the baggage of past hurts and wounds, Tantra provides a gentle, transformative journey towards healing. Through embodied practices like meditation, breathwork, and mindfulness, we can gradually release the grip of trauma on our lives, allowing us to step into a brighter, lighter version of ourselves.
But Tantra is not just about healing; it's also about authenticity. It encourages us to peel back the layers of societal conditioning and pretense to reveal our true selves. In a world that often encourages us to be someone we're not, Tantra invites us to embrace our authenticity, quirks, kinks and all. It's a beautiful reminder that we are enough just as we are.
Setting boundaries: The art of saying yes, no and maybe
Let's talk about boundaries - an essential aspect of healthy relationships, yet something many of us struggle with. Tantra, in its wisdom, teaches us the art of setting boundaries. It reminds us that saying 'yes' when we mean 'no' can be just as damaging as saying 'no' when we mean 'yes'.
Through embodied practices, we learn to honor our own needs and desires while respecting those of others. With practice you can even feel in your physical body whether it’s a yes or no. This body honesty is a somatic response that should not be ignored but too often is.

Balancing the energies: The dance of masculine and feminine polarities in Tantra
As we continue our journey into the enchanting realm of Tantra, let’s delve into a profound aspect that underpins this spiritual practice - the harmonious dance of masculine and feminine energies. Tantra recognizes that within each of us, regardless of gender, there exists a unique blend of these energies.
Balancing and understanding these polarities is a key to unlocking the full potential of Tantra.
Masculine and feminine energies: beyond gender
Let’s clarify what we mean when we speak of masculine and feminine energies in Tantra, we're not talking solely about gender. Instead, we're referring to universal energies that exist in all of us. The masculine energy is often associated with qualities such as strength, logic, and action, while the feminine energy embodies qualities like intuition, receptivity, and nurturing.
These energies aren't limited to any particular gender; they're inherent in all beings. For more on this topic check out my post: Masculine and feminine: Exploring the timeless dance of opposites.
The dance of shiva and shakti
In Tantra, these energies are personified as Shiva and Shakti, representing the masculine and feminine principles, respectively. Shiva, the embodiment of the masculine, is often depicted as the destroyer of ego and illusion, representing the power of awareness and consciousness. Shakti, the embodiment of the feminine, is seen as the creative, nurturing force that gives life to the universe.
The essence of Tantra lies in the harmonious interplay between these energies. It teaches us that finding balance between our masculine and feminine sides is essential for personal development and spiritual growth. Here's why:
- Inner Harmony: Just as the universe thrives on the balance of these energies, so do we. By acknowledging and nurturing both the masculine and feminine aspects within ourselves, we achieve inner harmony. We become more connected to our true selves, allowing us to tap into our full potential.
- Balancing Strength and Sensitivity: Embracing both energies enables us to access a wide range of qualities. We can be strong and assertive when needed (masculine), while also being compassionate and nurturing (feminine). This balance empowers us to adapt to various life situations with grace and authenticity.
- Healthy Relationships: Tantra recognizes that harmonizing these energies is essential for cultivating meaningful and balanced relationships. When we understand our own masculine and feminine energies, we're better equipped to connect with others on a deeper level. It allows us to appreciate and respect the energies in others, fostering healthier and more loving connections.
- Spiritual Growth: The interplay of masculine and feminine energies is a profound catalyst for spiritual growth. It's through this dance that we transcend our limited ego and enter a state of unity with the cosmos. Tantra teaches us that it's in this union that we find our true nature, where we are not separate from the divine but an integral part of it.
The dark side of Tantra
Over the years, I’ve observed that the practices in Tantra can lead some into an obsession with peak spiritual experiences (kundalini awakening) and addiction to physical and even energetic pleasure-seeking. These experiences can lead to an increase in a sense of separateness, isolation and loneliness and also amplify the natural ups and downs of life.
Individuals with bi-polar or obsessive compulsive disorders and or a history of addiction need to be specially mindful about managing and balancing their energetic systems. Non-dual philosophy can also be confusing as it suggests that separateness is an illusion which can lead to a blurring of personal boundaries, easily leading to emotional, physical and even sexual abuse.
Exploring the magical world of Tantra
A good way to dip your toe in the great river of Tantra is by attending a festival like, Stockholm Tantra Festival. There you’ll be able to sample lots of different workshops with lots of different teachers in a safe, fun and healthy environment.
The 3 minute game
A great tool for exploring personal boundaries, touch and the art of giving and receiving is called the 3 minute game.
The 3 minute game consists of two questions:
- How do you want me to touch you?
- How do you want to touch me?
You each take it in turn to ask the questions above and once you have consent, you take 3 minutes each to touch or be touched.
The wheel of consent
Intimacy coach Betty Martin created the wheel of consent as a map for giving and receiving. On this page on her website, Betty explains the wheel of consent and the 3 minute game.
Honoring Your Unique Blend
As you embark on your Tantra journey, remember that there's no one-size-fits-all approach to balancing these energies. Each of us carries a unique blend of masculine and feminine qualities, and that's something to be celebrated. Tantra encourages us to embrace and honor our individual mix, recognizing that it's a beautiful and integral part of who we are.
So, whether you find yourself naturally leaning more toward the masculine or feminine, know that your unique blend is a gift. It's a canvas upon which you can paint your own spiritual masterpiece. Through the practices of Tantra, you'll learn to dance with your energies, harmonize your inner world, and step into a more authentic, balanced version of yourself.
Conclusion
In the end, the journey of Tantra is not just about personal development; it's about embracing the totality of your being, transcending limitations, and finding unity within and with the world around you.
So, let the dance of masculine and feminine be your guiding light, illuminating the path to self-discovery and spiritual growth.
